Updates Week of November 25th

Thank you to all parents for attending the student learning conferences - research shows students are more successful with active parent involvement!

This week in math, we have been continuing learning many different addition strategies when working with up to four digit numbers.  We have been taking a problem-solving approach and have been focusing on being able to talk about the personal strategies we use to solve the problems presented to us.

In language arts, we are focusing on adding details to our sentences and providing good examples.  This will help us write better by allowing us to express our ideas more clearly and entertainingly.

In social, we are working on a new project - we are designing our own countries.  As we think about our country, we will be thinking about how the resources and land affect the life and people of that country.

In science, we have just finished up our reflection on our haunted house project.  We are continuing to build upon and apply our knowledge of simple machines to build devices that move.  As part of our building unit, if students can bring in recyclables such as cardboard, plastic bottles, bottle caps, etc. that would be very helpful!

Remember to read daily for at least 30 min and to write a reader's response at least 3 times every week!

Have a great weekend!

June 5 - Non-Instructional Day - No School for Students
June 26 - Last Day of Classes for Students

Updates by Sara

Dear Parents,

School life is amazing.  During Halloween, we researched some halloween animals like bats and spiders.  Then we wrote an essay about our animal to share all that we had learned! The essay also has art to go with it.  We created ripped art collages of our animals!

Gym is also a lot of fun.  We are learning how to play basketball.  We are getting really good at dribbling, and shooting.  We are practicing blocking and passing. It’s really fun to play basketball games - especially when we win!  Check out some pictures of us playing in the photo gallery!

For math, yesterday we had a small test.  The math test was so easy. Also, in math we are reviewing/practicing different addition strategies when adding 4-digit numbers.  So far we have learned front-end addition, vertical addition, and using number lines.

At parent teacher conferences, there will be a book fair. So bring money!

Remember to bring food for the food drive!

Have an awesome weekend!

Updates Week of October 28th

What a busy week we have had - and full of lots of fun, too!

The Grade 3s put on a spook-tacular assembly and it was nice to see so many parents come out to join us and watch our Halloween Parade!  We hope we gave you a good scare!  Halloween pictures are posted in the Photo Gallery - check them out!

Our Learning This Week

Inquiry/Science
We have been working on our spooky haunted house contraptions - we have been working really hard on problem solving and redesigning our contraptions to make our simple machines work just the way we want them to.  Ask me what simple machines I have used and how I used them in my haunted house! (More pictures coming soon!)

Inquiry/Social
We have just finished learning about the three major natural resources of Alberta and how Alberta and Albertans are affected by these resources.  This wraps up our first inquiry into Alberta: A Sense of the Land.  We are getting ready and are very excited to present all our learning thus far at our Celebration of Learning on the 15th of November.  Please mark your calendars!

Math
We have just finished the patterns unit and have recently begun our investigations into numbers.  We will be developing number sense for the next little while.
- School/Home Connection - Ask your child to do math in real life situations - at the grocery store, counting things, etc. Ask your child to explain their thinking!

Language Arts
We started our inquiry into nonfiction text and have gained a good understanding of how to navigate and understand nonfiction resources better.  So far, we have learned to set a purpose for our reading, make meaning of what we read by making connections and predictions, and we have learned to take visual jot notes of things we read, videos we watch, or in class.  We are now working on creating summaries from our jot notes.

We have also learned how to write an essay - we wrote one about the region we were studying in Alberta.  We also wrote another essay about the forestry industry of Alberta.  We are now finishing up another research project we did on our choice of a Halloween-related animal and are now finishing up an essay about that!  We are so excited to share our work with you - stay tuned!

We have also been very busy reading/practicing our lines for our short play for our Remembrance Day Assembly.  The assembly is at 10:30 on Friday.  We really hope you can make it!

Happy Halloween!
