Week 9 Tasks

Room 58
June 1 – 7, 2020, Week 9

Dear Parents,

There are only four more weeks of school left!  I am so proud of how far we have come along during this challenging time!  We have completed our first mini-inquiry online – How can we as ethnobotanists understand the relationship between the first peoples of Alberta and the land.  We will be sharing our culminating project next week.  For the month of June, we will be working on a new mini-inquiry – How can we retell Alberta's story using shadow puppets!  As always, participation in all online activities is encouraged and completion of the final project is optional.

Last week, we had our virtual coding class.  It was a great introduction to coding using Scratch.  Students are welcome to continue to play around on Scratch – in order to save their work and share it with others, they will need to sign up for a free account. The link for Scratch is posted under Resources.  This week, we will try a math assignment using Scratch (no registration required).

Next Tuesday, the first half of our whole-class Google Meet, (Tuesday, at 11 am), we will be learning how to use Minecraft: Education Edition.  The point of using Minecraft is not to turn our students into gamers but our gamers into students.  Your child does not need to be an expert Minecrafter or be familiar with Minecraft at all to participate in Minecraft: Education Edition.  The digital platform will allow students an opportunity to work on core curriculum outcomes in a collaborative manner where they problem solve, engage in critical thinking and experience learning through creative play.
Downloading Minecraft: EE is optional - If you would rather your child not download Minecraft on their home device, that is fine.  Your child can simply complete the other Math assignments and not do the Minecraft assignment.  The link to download Minecraft: Education Edition is posted under resources.  The app can be download on a computer (Mac or Windows) or an iPad.
The second half of our whole-class Meet next week, we will have two special guests joining us who will be teaching us something new and fun to prepare for an end of the year surprise!

Virtual Literature Circles are starting this week!  Literature Circles are an excellent opportunity for students to engage in thoughtful discussion while developing a love of reading.  These are optional 20-minute Google Meet sessions with a small group of students (maximum 4 per group).  If your child signed up for the optional opportunity, you will be receiving an email detailing the Google Meet time and the expectations.  If not participating in literature circles, your child can complete the independent novel studies instead (work is posted under Classwork).  If you or your child have changed your minds about participating or not participating, feel free to send me an email.  Again, this is an optional opportunity.

Our Google Meet times and my office hours are listed below. I will continue to be available by phone and email during regular office hours.  Please note some important changes to the timings this week.  I will be away for a teacher workshop all day Thursday and Friday.  As such, I will be unavailable by phone or email during the day.  I have added a drop-in session on Wednesday at 12 pm to replace the Thursday drop-in session.  Please feel free to email me with any questions and I will reply as soon as I can.

Week 8 Tasks

May 25 – 31, 2020

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to Week 8 of ongoing learning!

A reminder that this week’s whole-class Google Meet session is a special Virtual Workshop.  On Tuesday, at 11 am, we have a special guest joining us who will guide the class through a creative coding project on scratch.  For the best experience, students should use a laptop or desktop computer for this session – if an iPhone or iPad is used, students can still follow along but may not be able create their own project.

In addition to the this week’s tasks, you may want to encourage your child to go back to the previous week’s SMART lessons to see the feedback left for them on the Handout pages of their work.  All tasks are designed for students to complete independently with minimum parental support.  If support is required, you are welcome to direct your child to the drop-in sessions.  Feel free to contact me to arrange an alternate time for help if the drop-in times don’t work your child.

Below are this week’s tasks. Approximate completion times are listed by each task to help you plan your week.  Students are encouraged to complete all tasks by Monday, June 1st.

Our Google Meet times and my office hours are listed below. I will continue to be available by phone and email during regular office hours.
